Review For Inescapable

The film tries to meld politically charged personal drama with the action-movie tropes you'd expect in a story set in the Middle East. (Chase through a crowded marketplace? Brawl at the hamam? Check!)
Alonso Duralde-The Wrap

The plot unfolds at a nice clip, but at no point does director Ruba Nadda evade expectations.
Farran Smith Nehme-New York Post

One hopes "Inescapable" is only a momentary stumble for this promising filmmaker.
Betsy Sharkey-Los Angeles Times

A Canadian nonthriller that plays like a heavily sedated hybrid of "Taken" and "Not Without My Daughter" ...
Jeannette Catsoulis-New York Times

Inescapable is Nadda's first foray into thriller territory, and her inexperience shows in awkwardly mounted fight scenes and clumsy car chases, not to mention an almost fatally explanatory script.
Ella Taylor-NPR

Muddled and inert despite the best intentions, this inescapably dull thriller plays like a Middle Eastern take on Liam Neeson's "Taken."
Joe Neumaier-New York Daily News

Clearly meaning Inescapable as an act of love, Ms. Nada, a Canadian filmmaker with Syrian/Palestinian parents, has instead done a great disservice to her gene pool and our film-loving sensibilities. Irksome would be a more appropriate title.
Brandon Judell-CultureCatch

The movie suffers from the conflict between its potboiler instincts and the filmmaker's understandable need to acknowledge the brutality of Syria's secretive regime.
Robert Levin-amNewYork

Doesn't have the juice normally associated with such violent entertainment. Its interest in characterization is admirable, but there's little firepower where it counts the most.
Brian Orndorf-Blu-ray.com

The movie could just as well be set in Islamabad, Nairobi or any city Westerners find threatening. (It was filmed, in fact, in Johannesburg.) It would look about right on a cable channel at 9 p.m.
Craig Seligman-Bloomberg News

This international thriller-sparked by a nice, unexpected Marisa Tomei performance-starts off promisingly but trails off into cheap melodrama.
David Noh-Film Journal International

It's a deeply confused movie, sometimes productively so.
Sam Adams-AV Club

Ruba Nadda's 2012 Toronto International Film Festival Gala Presentation is an okay actioner of the political mystery intrigue type.
Donald J. Levit-ReelTalk Movie Reviews

Feels like a not-very-skillful attempt at making a certain kind of movie...repeatedly trips over its own shoelaces, calling attention to distinct story-telling shortcomings.
Marshall Fine-Hollywood & Fine

The film spins its wheels for almost an hour until collapsing under the weight of exposition that renders the mystery nearly besides the point.
Chuck Bowen-Slant Magazine

A thriller based in Syria with grainy photography, absurd coincidences, one that is stiffly acted with stilted dialogue.
Harvey S. Karten-Compuserve

Movie Overview For The Queen of Versailles

With the epic dimensions of a Shakespearean tragedy, The Queen of Versailles follows billionaires Jackie and David’s rags-to-riches story to uncover the innate virtues and flaws of the American dream. We open on the triumphant construction of the biggest house in America, a sprawling, 90,000-square-foot mansion inspired by Versailles. Since a booming time-share business built on the real-estate bubble is financing it, the economic crisis brings progress to a halt and seals the fate of its owners. We witness the impact of this turn of fortune over the next two years in a riveting film fraught with delusion, denial, and self-effacing humor.

Review For The Queen of Versailles

It's priceless.
Cath Clarke-Time Out

Seriously, if this was the American Dream, couldn't we have come up with something better?
Tom Long-Detroit News

Although it's a guilty pleasure, "The Queen of Versailles" is artful enough that both the prosecution and the defense could invoke it when the peasants cry "Off with their heads!"
Joe Williams-St. Louis Post-Dispatch

This rags-to-riches-to-almost-rags-again queen has an endearing knack for looking on the bright side. You find yourself, by the end, wishing her well.
Moira MacDonald-Seattle Times

"The Queen of Versailles" is funny, sad, infuriating, instructive. It's the American Dream inflated to ridiculous extremes, until it bursts.
Bill Goodykoontz-Arizona Republic

More than a social morality tale, this is a character study, with the title well chosen.
Rick Groen-Globe and Mail

Humanizes the upper one percent in a 100-percent entertaining way.
Al Alexander-The Patriot Ledger

Strangely entertaining and revealing documentary about a culture obsessed with money and people aspiring to a life they can't afford. Greed is good once again if you can borrow enough money to consume all you desire. Mind the debt gap.
Cameron Williams-The Popcorn Junkie

...their plight plays like the financial crisis in miniature. Or perhaps it's in macro.
Josh Larsen-LarsenOnFilm

My problem with this riches to rags Americana story is that I felt no sympathy for the featured self-absorbed materialists.
Dennis Schwartz-Ozus' World Movie Reviews

If you've ever wondered how that one percent of the richest lives, this film will show you how one family lives (they are probably back in the 99 percent now), and it ain't pretty.
Robert Roten-Laramie Movie Scope

Both the quintessential documentary about the Great Recession, and quite possibly the most Schadenfreude-filled movie of all time.
Stephen Silver-EntertainmentTell

A documentary about a rich couple riding the waves of wealth and greed and then plunging downwards.
Frederic and Mary Ann Brussat-Spirituality and Practice

A powerhouse documentary, the film shifts from simply being a fly-on-the-wall look at material decadence and moral decay into a study of a family trying to hold itself together during a trying period.
Matt Brunson-Creative Loafing

a repetitive exercise in schadenfreude, and the Siegels don't do much to alter that... The Queen of Versailles leaves viewers with one feeling about the Siegels: Let them eat stale cake.
Steve Persall-Tampa Bay Times

Documentaries are rarely as hilarious as this one. Well, the first half of it at least
Rich Cline-Contactmusic.com

[E]nds up an ever less slightly ungenerous look at the .01 percent than it might have been... But this is still a brutal film from many angles.
MaryAnn Johanson-Flick Filosopher

One of the great unsayable truths about the American dream is that it is a bit of a Ponzi scheme ... our system admits a glimmer of hope that anyone, no matter how lowborn, can rise to the top.
Philip Martin-Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

Extremely funny and revealing ...
Philip French-Observer [UK]

[Siegel] is now suing Greenfield for "misrepresentation". Well, I know whose side I'm on.
Charlotte O'Sullivan-This is London

She epitomises a Western culture struggling to wean itself off debt.
Grant Rollings-Sun Online

Greenfield's film is bathed in Florida sunshine, adding to the sensation that we're watching Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous with a Marxist punchline.
Tara Brady-Irish Times

Never has grotesque wealth looked so unenviable, or its removal been so entertaining, as in this garishly watchable riches-to-rags documentary ...
Steve Rose-Guardian [UK]

[Siegel] ultimately emerges as someone who belongs more in The Little House on the Prairie: ever cheerful, and triumphantly unimpeachable.
Antonia Quirke-Financial Times

The temptation to be moralistic must have been overpowering, yet Greenfield finally manages to summon sympathy for people who at first seem vain, selfish and greedy.

Review For Red 2

Ultimately, it's popcorn nihilism without the big laughs that helped distract from the casual approach to life and death in 'Red'.
Anna Smith-Time Out

This is a likable, almost gentle comedy and also a violent action film about the possibility of a nuclear bomb going off in a major city.
Mick LaSalle-San Francisco Chronicle

Willis is self-evidently capable of kicking the asses of men considerably younger than himself. But at some point shouldn't he consider an alternative pastime?
Christopher Orr-The Atlantic

Ridiculously action-packed and just as endearing, Red 2 is why we go to sequels despite our well-earned cynicism about studios churning them out.
Lisa Kennedy-Denver Post

It's nice to see oldsters cavorting in kaboom movies, but a little of this stuff goes a long way.
Peter Rainer-Christian Science Monitor

What's interesting about 'RED 2' is that, not only is it better than its predecessor, it is miles better ...
James Rocchi-MSN Movies

A highly-watchable but stilted sequel that serves as a complacent sequel to the fun original.
John Hanlon-Big Hollywood

Much of the originality has faded and Morgan Freeman's absence is keenly felt, but the end result is still a fun, exciting adventure.
Wesley Lovell-Cinema Sight

Red 2 fails to capture the fun of the first film, but manages to hold on to its weaker traits, such as a bloated runtime and an inundation of mindless action sequences, turning this into a rather forgettable affair.
Jeff Beck-We Got This Covered

The cookie-cutter action sequences - car chases, fireballs, shoot-outs - are so-so and whereas the first film had a giddy cheekiness to it, the vibe here just feels forced, a common trait of sequels we really weren't hankering for.
Jim Schembri-3AW

Who knows if teenagers will appreciate this type of actioner? No matter. They get plenty of films designed for them. You go, gramps!
Bruce Bennett-Spectrum (St. George, Utah)

The basic formula of the freefall of action, laughs and casting class of the 2010 first film is the same, but everything is less spontaneous, a little more forced and a tad overcooked this second time around... Mirren comes out best
Louise Keller-Urban Cinefile

RED 2's support cast (including the new additions) are punching hard for this sequel to be as fun as the original; however the diluted globetrotting and Willis' clear 'pay-check' performance make you wish they'd retired this series after the original.
Blake Howard-2UE That Movie Show

RED 2 plays it pretty safe, carefully emulating the style and tone of its predecessor, so if you enjoyed the first one, RED 2 should tick the same boxes for you.
Tim Martain-The Mercury

Silly but unapologetic entertainment.
Rebecca Barry-Flicks.co.nz

About the best - and maybe the worst - that can be about RED 2 is that it is an exceedingly safe pick.
Philip Martin-Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

While we applaud the minds behind Red 2 for making a film for adults in a sea of movies for kids and teenage boys, they didn't actually make a good film for adults.
Kimber Myers-The Playlist

The Expendables meets The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel isn't an obviously winning formula.
Guy Lodge-This is London

Smart, breezy spy action, with an of-the-moment vibe that takes it post-post-9/11 and into the Wikileaks era of global politics.
MaryAnn Johanson-Flick Filosopher

Willis looks so tired, so lacking in vitality, that it's tempting to suggest he follow his character's lead and retire.
Ed Whitfield-The Ooh Tray

[A] tiresome sequel ...
Philip French-Observer [UK]

The plot is all too generic, right down to the ticking-bomb climax. You can easily imagine it being taken off the shelf and handed to a bunch of younger actors with barely a tweak.
Jason Best-Movie Talk

The trick to RED 2's success is its willingness to allow the actors to roar through all their greatest hits at the loudest possible volume.
Donald Clarke-Irish Times

The plot might not add up to much, but there's plenty of fire-fights, punch-ups and bristling one-liners to go round a cast so vast they could have called this The Extendables.
Graham Young-Birmingham Mail

Like the first one, it's played for laughs in-between bouts of mayhem; most of the gags are off-target, though Mirren's Nancy Mitfordesque assassin gets a pretty good kill ratio.
Andrew Pulver-Guardian [UK]

Retired, extremely dull.
Sophie Monks Kaufman-Little White Lies

Review For The Last King of Scotland

Having cut his teeth on documentaries, Kevin Macdonald acts as if a shaky-cam aesthetic alone is enough to fuel dramatic tension.
Joshua Rothkopf-Time Out New York

Mr. Whitaker and Mr. McAvoy head a first-rate cast that helps The Last King of Scotland to illuminate one of the many dark chapters in recent African history.
Andrew Sarris-New York Observer

If this genius turn by Whitaker (he starred in Bird and The Crying Game) doesn't earn an Oscar nomination, then those little statues will lose what little meaning they have.
Roger Moore-Orlando Sentinel

Whitaker's dedicated, nuanced performance is excellent and lifts the film from some unsteady early moments.
Dave Calhoun-Time Out

See the movie for Whitaker alone: He's possessed by evil and possesses it wholly, rendering the film (and everyone in it) his plaything.
Amy Biancolli-Houston Chronicle

A good movie elevated by Whitaker's pitch-perfect performance.
Terry Lawson-Detroit Free Press

David Nusair-Reel Film Reviews

Historical fantasy rules in Hollywood's Africa.
Prairie Miller-WBAI Web Radio

It's a deconstruction of Idi Amin's persona, played with such dedication by Whitaker the surrounding narrative feels without purpose.
Mark Palermo-Coast (Halifax, Nova Scotia)

There is surprise in Whitaker's step, with a curtain of menace running beneath it. His is one of the fiercest, least predictable performances of 2006, so fully on edge that he becomes the movie's edge.
Christopher Smith-Bangor Daily News (Maine)

The four highly diverse leads are uniformly excellent.
Frank Lovece-Film Journal International

Whitaker brings us close to Amin, yet he never allows us to actually become comfortable around the man. His Amin is capricious and unpredictable, a personality that can seem volcanic one moment and vulnerable a few minutes later.
James Sanford-Kalamazoo Gazette

La película vale la pena sobre todo por la imponente actuación de Forest Whitaker, igualmente encantador o amenazante en la piel de uno de los dictadores más sanguinarios de África.
Enrique Buchichio-Uruguay Total

Two terrific performances cap this interesting historical perspective on ruthless dictator Idi Amin.
Wesley Lovell-Cinema Sight

Whitaker's incendiary and incandescent performance dominates this movie as much as Helen Mirren's performance defines The Queen.
Lori Hoffman-Atlantic City Weekly

Exalando um carisma mais do que apropriado ao personagem, [Forest Whitaker] busca seduzir não apenas Nicholas, mas também o espectador.

Whitaker's riveting and deserved Oscar-nominated performance pretty much dominates -- almost to the point of overpowering -- this fictionalized drama, based on Giles Foden's novel.

Millions know their voices, but no one knows their names. In his compelling new film 20 FEET FROM STARDOM, award-winning director Morgan Neville shines a spotlight on the untold true story of the backup singers behind some of the greatest musical legends of the 21st century. Triumphant and heartbreaking in equal measure, the film is both a tribute to the unsung voices who brought shape and style to popular music and a reflection on the conflicts, sacrifices and rewards of a career spent harmonizing with others. These gifted artists span a range of styles, genres and eras of popular music, but each has a uniquely fascinating and personal story to share of life spent in the shadows of superstardom. Along with rare archival footage and a peerless soundtrack, 20 FEET FROM STARDOM boasts intimate interviews with Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Wonder, Mick Jagger and Sting to name just a few. However, these world-famous figures take a backseat to the diverse array of backup singers whose lives and stories take center stage in the film. (c) TWC-Radius

Review For 20 Feet From Stardom

As long as you're hearing the singing and stories of Lisa Fischer, Merry Clayton, and the great Darlene Love, you can bliss out on their passion.
Owen Gleiberman-Entertainment Weekly

The movie takes its cues from Standing in the Shadows of Motown, another act of pop-culture revisionism that tried to give musical credit where it was due.
J. R. Jones-Chicago Reader

Just about everything in this movie is right. And anybody who gives a rip about unsung heroines of popular music and giving credit when credit's overdue had better come up with a good excuse not to see it.
Michael Phillips-Chicago Tribune

You may never hear the Rolling Stones's Gimme Shelter the same way again after hearing Jagger's and Clayton's separate accounts of the recording of the song.
Liam Lacey-Globe and Mail

The enthusiasm and love of music on display is just unavoidable. "20 Feet" may not get the whole story, but it gets some good ones.
Tom Long-Detroit News

Music documentarian Morgan Neville uses a mix of live interviews and archival footage to let the singers, and their music, tell their stories of vocal triumph and thwarted ambition.
Barbara VanDenburgh-Arizona Republic

If I had this much talent in the one room, and so much concert footage of them bringing down the house, adding 'la la las' and 'oohs' to some of the greatest songs ever written, I wouldn't quite know what to cut out either.
Simon Miraudo-Quickflix

While major names turn up for interviews (a gracious Bruce Springsteen, a funny Mick Jagger, a technical Sting), this is primarily all about these unsung singers, especially the great Darlene Love, who began her career under contract to Phil Spector.
David 'Mad Dog' Bradley-Rip It Up

It's not the definitive look at background singers - a good mini-series for television might be the place for that - but it's certainly entertaining.
CJ Johnson-ABC Radio (Australia)

An affecting love letter to those who spent their lives on the edge of the spotlight.
Jim Schembri-3AW

A hit on the festival circuit, affectionately told, Twenty Feet from Stardom is a treat.
Ed Gibbs-The Sun Herald

A life affirming, toe-tapping documentary that not only places the magnifying glass on back-up singers, their role and music, but examines the music scene and its icons during the past 50 years
Louise Keller-Urban Cinefile

Part musical history lesson, part performance film and part character study -- all of which combines to become its own song of hope and inspiration.
Mike Scott-Times-Picayune

Backup singers step into the light in a great music documentary.
John Wirt-Advocate (Baton Rouge, LA)

All of these special ladies -- most of them ironically unsung and often exploited -- obviously know their way around a microphone
John Urbancich-Sun Newspapers of Cleveland

A heartfelt and rousing documentary tribute to the talent and artistry of female backup singers.
Frederic and Mary Ann Brussat-Spirituality and Practice

I guess it leaves us with the message not everyone is destined to be a star, for one reason or another.
Dennis Schwartz-Ozus' World Movie Reviews

Although a few white and male backup singers appear, the film becomes a de facto chronicle of the experiences of many African-American women in show business, who -- like their counterparts in less high-profile jobs -- often are undervalued and exploited.
John Beifuss-Commercial Appeal (Memphis, TN)

In a way, critics are the backup singers of film.
Tony Macklin-tonymacklin.net

20 Feet From Stardom will be highly entertaining to anyone who ever let a needle drop into a '70s-era groove.
Katherine Monk-Canada.com

Neville does a good job of highlighting songs that are especially characterized by backup singers, like Lou Reed's 'Walk on the Wild Side,' and introducing us to some of the 'unsung' talent that made those hits possible.
Peter Canavese-Groucho Reviews

This fantastic glimpse into the lives of background singers, old and new, directed by Morgan Neville, is completely mesmerizing.
Jeanne Kaplan-Kaplan vs. Kaplan

It is a total pleasure, a rare treat, to listen and watch old footage of these indispensable performers belt out their melodies and harmonies. They are truly pioneers that helped shape the world of music for generations to come.
David Kaplan-Kaplan vs. Kaplan

This is a fascinating doc for pop, soul, R&B and rock fans, for it peels back the often unfair layers of the music business like the skins on an onion. Sometimes, it'll make you cry to witness how terribly these talents were treated.

South Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook directed this violent and offbeat story of punishment and vengeance. Oh Dae-su (Choi Min-sik) is a husband and father whose reputation for womanizing is well known. One day, for reasons he doesn't understand, Oh Dae-su finds himself locked up in a prison cell, with no idea of what his crime was or whom his jailers may be. With a small television as his only link to the outside world and a daily ration of fried dumplings as his only sustenance, Oh Dae-su struggles to keep his mind and body intact, but when he learns through a news report that his wife has been killed, he begins a long and difficult project of digging an escape tunnel with a pair of chopsticks. Before he can finish -- and after 15 years behind bars -- Oh Dae-su is released, with as little explanation as when he was locked up, and he's soon given a wad of money and a cellular phone by a bum on the street. Emotionally stunted but physically strong after 15 years in jail, Oh Dae-su struggles to unravel the secret of who is responsible for locking him up, what happened to his wife and daughter, and how to best get revenge against his captors. ..seems to be about the awfulness and inhumanity of vengeance. But watch how the film moves.
Josh Larsen-LarsenOnFilm

Vengeance here's a clever, evolving beast. Dae-su's guardian-like enemy stokes his bloodlust, embittering the free man's returning love of life. The climax is a scarlet swelling into Greek tragedy as truth, reprisal and justice smear.
Brian Gibson-Vue Weekly (Edmonton, Canada)

Banzai-violence kin to "Cast Away" about a man at time's cruel whim, "Oldboy"is an endurance test worth taking. Its conclusion is the most sadistic and destructively wrathful since "Seven," and the point of no return has rarely shocked this much.
Nick Rogers-Suite101.com

Intense and dark but also humorous and moving, this is an ambitious film that fulfils its promise, despite an arguably overly protracted denouement. Excellent.

One of the best imports I've seen in a while...
Felix Vasquez Jr.-Cinema Crazed

Vengeance, says director Chan-wook Park, is the most dramatic subject in the world. The problem with that view driving his filmmaking is that it seems to override his creative judgement, presenting us with cruelty as the vehicle for his cinematic jollies.
Urban Cinefile Critics-Urban Cinefile

Director Chan-wook Park keeps the suspense going for as long as possible.
Joe Lozito-Big Picture Big Sound

Part character study, part action flick, the film seamlessly blends genres in an extremely satisfying way. The photography is spectacular - of particular note is a Escher-like staircase sequence that is simply extraordinary.
Jason Gorber-Film Scouts

As played by Choi Min-shik, Dae-su attains tragic stature. He's like a shaggy King Lear undone by his own foolishness.

Definitivamente no para todos los gustos, esta violenta y asombrosa película coreana promete convertirse en una de las verdaderas sorpresas del año.
Enrique Buchichio-Uruguay Total

Park has a strong visual style and a near-surrealistic noir touch, but unraveling the mystery scarcely repays sitting through his relentless rounds of gut-wrenching violence.

Not to everyone's tastes, but if you have a strong stomach, OldBoy is sure to impress.
-Empire Magazine

Oldboy is a delirious, confronting ride, a movie full of visceral shocks and aesthetic pleasures: it has an explosive immediacy and a persistent afterlife, a lingering impact that is hard to shake.
Philippa Hawker-Sydney Morning Herald

Be amazed at my cruel virility. Feel the pain. Oh yeah.
Nathaniel Rogers-Film Experience

Its tentacles are still wriggling in my memory, as if I just ate something that should never have been served in the first place.
Jeffrey Overstreet-Looking Closer

That Park has talent in the technical department is a given; that he's a good filmmaker is debatable.
